Does life ever feel like a game of chess?
I learned how to play chess a couple of years ago. Chess is a game of strategy. You have to be able to imagine and envision how several moves out may impact the board. It is difficult to learn and even once you learn how to play, it is easy to lose. Does life ever feel like a game of chess to you? Do you find yourself over-analyzing decision after decision. I talk to many people who are paralyzed in making an major life decisions in fear that it would result in them losing at the game of life. Usually, these are well meaning people who do not want to take a step outside of “God’s will.” Most of these decisions however are amoral in nature. They are more of the “Where should I live?”, “Who should I marry?”, “What kind of career should I be in?” type of questions. If you feel like your life is like a chess game, I have great news for you!
Your King cannot lose.
Certainly every choice we make has consequences. The places we go, the people we meet, the books we read, all impact and shape who we become. We do reap what we sow. However, God is not waiting for you to make a move only to respond in a “gotcha” kind of way. His will is not a strategic chess game, its not a maze, nor a mystery. His will has been clearly revealed in his word. We get far too consumed and preoccupied with areas in our lives and decisions that God has given us freedom to make.
If you feel trapped in a corner and think you are on the edge of check mate consider these truths from sacred scriputre:
- I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Job 42:2
- Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Psalm 139:16
- The LORD has established his thrown in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. Psalm 103:19
- The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9
Life is hard. Some decisions can certainly be tough. But we do not have to fear for God is for us. He is guiding our steps. You will never make an amoral decision that will forfeit God’s richest blessings in your life. His richest for you is secure in Jesus Christ.
So if you are in a chess game, it is not with God, but the devil. Out strategize him by abiding in Christ and His word.
Rejoice, for your King never loses.
What are the hardest decisions for you to make? Why do you have a difficult time with those decisions in particular?
